The Claddagh is one of the most popular symbols in Irish jewelry. Legend has it that in the 17th century, a Galway native was captured by pirates and sold into slavery. During his time as a slave he was sold to a wealthy goldsmith, who taught him the craft.  When he was released years later and returned to Claddagh, Galway, he found his love still waiting for him.
